Description
Cradleboards were made by Native Americans to carry and keep their babies safe during the day. Cradleboards were made by many tribes throughout the United States some have chosen to continue use of these ingenious traditional baby carriers. The basic design of a cradleboard is a flat, hard back made of wood, with woven or cloth sides that enveloped the baby, and could be fastened or laced to safely secure her or him. Most have a footrest, as well as a head bow for head protection. The materials used to construct the cradleboard and its pieces vary widely according to the tribe and their geographic location. This is an Ojibwe style cradleboard. The back board is made of cedar because it is strong but light weight. The head bow and foot rest are made of oak because oak is easy to bend. This cradleboard is assembled with rawhide. The cradle bag is attached to the board with leather and it is made of red micro suede and cotton lining with a Crane print. This is one of four cradleboards made for "The Cradleboard Project". The four Cradleboards represent the four seasons. The Crane and the color red represent summer. The beaded Crane design is an original concept of mine. It is hand stitched with size 11 glass beads and it is 10 inches in diameter.
